Acupuncture: Frequently asked Questions

Q. What is Acupuncture?

A. The insertion of thin sterile disposable needles at the acupoints of the body, ear or scalp. Chinese medicine contends that the flow of energy or Qi flow through channels at or just below the skin. If Qi ( energy) flows freely the body is healthy: If it is blocked pain and disease appears. The insertion of needles at acupoints will move the blocked Qi form the channels and promote healing. Heat as well as very mild micro current electrical stimulation may also be used.

Q .How does Acupuncture work?

A. Research has shown that Acupuncture stimulates the brain to produce opiates (endorphin)and simulate the brain to release neurotransmitters such as serotonin as well as stimulate hormones that control menstruation and ovulation. It has been shown that a point on the Gall bladder channel will light up a section of the brain the corresponds to the eye. The relaxed feeling you may get from an acupuncture treatment is due to a sedation of the fight or flight mechanism of the sympathetic nervous system .
